Futher pickup stuff.
The main misconception about pickups is that the manufacturers
quoted DC resistance figure (eg,6.0k Ohms) will tell you all you need to know.
This is not the case. The DC R will give you a rough idea, Such intricate
factors as wire gauge,impedance,inductance in millihenries,bobbin type,poll
height/stagger,magnet type,magnet placement (bar or poll),whether it has a cover/and or steel baseplate ,incidental
capacitance,etc,etc, are what make up the pickup's sound [ie, it's tone generating properties]...not forgetting the
contributing factors of what kind of guitar BODIES they are put into
(Mahogany,Alder,Ash,etc) and the other physical characteristic of the
guitar,such as scale length and even to a small extent the type of neck joint
etc,etblinkingcetera.
It all makes a difference,to some degree
or other.

In practical reality,how complicated do you
want to make it? if you've got an Epiphone Les Paul/SG Standard,Studio or Custom and you put "Standard"
Gibson Pickups in, you will get a very convincing Gibson sound - simple as that.
If you buy a far eastern humbucker to put in your cheap strat copy...well, who
can tell?
Curtis Novak is a guy with a very
intricate hand, and great skill at building pickups.
SK make sterling
attempts at explaining the devious machinations of the infernal
device.
Other factors,as mentioned by Guitar Player,are very
relevant here.
Really,
the way it all goes together in a decently made guitar is very relevant...have I
got this point through yet? :)
